We are excited to announce the publication of an ‘Inflow and Infiltration Guidance Document’ for Wastewater Utilities' developed by Moonshot Missions, with generous funding from the Great Lakes Protection Fund (GLPF). This publication is part of Moonshot Missions’ broader mission to deliver tailored technical assistance and scalable solutions to utilities across the country.
Inflow and Infiltration (I&I) are persistent challenges for wastewater utilities, particularly in communities with aging infrastructure. Excessive I&I can overwhelm wastewater treatment plants, increase operating costs, and lead to sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) or basement backups. In some systems, I&I can account for up to 40% or more of total flow during wet weather, forcing utilities to treat large volumes of essentially clean water. This not only reduces system capacity for actual sewage but also strains public resources and threatens environmental public health.
This guidance document offers a practical, accessible tool for wastewater utility operators and managers to evaluate their systems and implement cost-effective strategies for mitigating I&I. The document provides:
An overview of the causes and consequences of I&I
Frameworks for assessing and evaluating system vulnerabilities
Solutions and implementation strategies
Maintenance and asset management best practices
Case studies from utilities that have implemented I&I reduction programs
The Inflow and Infiltration Guidance Document is now available for download at the button below.
