IMPACTS

Chesapeake Beach is a small community of 6,000 located the Calvert County Maryland. The wastewater utility must comply with stringent nutrient discharge standards to protect the biologically diverse and unique Chesapeake Bay watershed. Rising sea levels pose an existential threat due to the risk of flooding, accentuated by more frequent and severe rainfall.

Moonshot Missions is leveraging its relationship with the state and federal agencies in helping the utility obtain funding for capital projects to improve operational performance. Moonshot’s recommendation to the state has also resulted in possible development of a joint program aimed at improving Chesapeake Bay water/wastewater utility severe weather resilience. This ongoing effort, if implemented, could result in funding assistance for several wastewater utilities in the Chesapeake Bay watershed dealing with similar resiliency issues including Chesapeake Beach WWTP plant.
