Moonshot Missions seeks a Utility Advisor with hands-on experience in non-revenue water (NRW) management to support a range of water loss control and technical assistance projects nationwide. This position works directly with public water systems, private utilities, tribes, and public agencies to identify water loss, improve metering accuracy, and implement practical strategies to reduce real and apparent losses.
While NRW and water loss control will be a primary focus, Utility Advisors at Moonshot Missions contribute across a range of technical assistance areas — and will have opportunities to grow into new subject matter as our team and project portfolio evolve. This role is well-suited for a water professional ready to apply technical skills broadly and grow within a mission-driven organization.
Requirements
POSITION TITLE UTILITY ADVISOR – NON-REVENUE WATER
Time Commitment: Full or Part Time
Location: Remote with required travel to client sites within the US.
Classification: Employee or Consultant
Training and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in any of the following: water resources, engineering, planning, environmental science, public policy or related field in the water sector.
5+ years of full-time experience working in or with water utilities in operations, water loss control, distribution system management, or related technical work – utility side-experience strongly valued.
Desired Qualifications:
Working knowledge of AWWA M36 water auditing methodology and the AWWA Free Water Audit Software
Experience or familiarity with Volumetric Water Benefits Accounting
Experience conducting or supporting water loss audits for public water systems, including data gathering, audit completion, and interpreting results
Familiarity with leak detection methods and equipment, pressure management, and real loss control strategies
Experience with apparent loss control including meter testing, meter replacement programs, and billing data analysis
Familiarity with advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and its role in NRW identification and reduction · Experience working with small or under-resourced water systems is a plus
Familiarity with EPA, SRF, or other funding programs that support water loss control and infrastructure projects is a plus
Curiosity and willingness to engage across water and wastewater topic areas beyond core NRW expertise
Comfort working in a small, nimble organization where responsibilities may shift based on client and project needs
Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to translate technical findings for non-technical audiences
Professional Engineer (PE) license or relevant water operator certification a plus
Special Requirements:
Must possess and maintain a valid US driver’s license

Collaborate with the Moonshot Missions team to work directly with water systems across the country by:
Conducting water loss audits using AWWA M36 methodology and supporting utilities in interpreting and acting on results
Assisting with Level 1 water loss audit data quality review and validation · Supporting leak detection and repair planning, including coordination with field crews and equipment vendors
Evaluating metering infrastructure and recommending improvements to reduce apparent losses
Assisting water systems in developing NRW reduction workplans and tracking progress toward water loss goals
Supporting development of technical reports, regulatory documents, and funding applications related to water loss control
Supporting other Moonshot Missions technical assistance projects as needed, including areas such as asset management, infrastructure planning, and funding navigation
Contributing to internal planning, coordination, and QA/QC processes
Oversee consultant work products

Salary commensurate with experience, ranging from $75k - $115k
